On a recent episode of 'What Happened When' with Co-hosts Conrad Thompson and Tony Schiavone, Conrad Thompson brought up the topic that during the 80s and 90s, WCW operated as a wrestling promotion that didn't profit from pay-per-view and television rights fees, due to the shortsightedness of Turner Broadcasting and when he speculated on whether or not WCW actually did turn a profit as many wrestling fans theorize, Tony Schiavone shared his thoughts as to why he thinks WCW failed.
His comments are pure speculation and should not be taken as 100% fact, but he tells the story of how WCW basically bankrolled the rights fees for the defunct Atlanta Thrashers of the National Hockey League and he didn't pull any punches, when it comes to his feelings toward Turner Broadcasting and how it ran WCW.
"I don't know if you've heard this story. I don't know if it's true. But I had heard and I don't know if I heard it officially or not, we're talking about the 90s right now. I heard that Turner got its money to be able to put to the down to the, the franchise rights fee for the Atlanta Thrashers for the NHL thanks to the money that WCW was making for them back then. WCW's money paid for the Atlanta Thrashers, who now you know now back in Winnipeg and the Winnipeg Jets. And it was WCW there. Again, again, it goes back to this blanket ******g statement that I've always said, Turner should have never run wrestling, Turner didn't give a shit about wrestling. And the reason WCW failed, was because of the Turner corporate structure, back then. That's why. And that's my opinion. Maybe I'm wrong. I don't think I am."
