A very interesting article on CBC.ca (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) on former WWE & WCW Star Earthquake (John Tenta) sheds some light on how he got his start in the WWE, as a result of breaking free from the world of Sumo Wrestling.

Tenta got his start in Sumo Wrestling and travelled to Japan in his early 20's, racking up over 20 victories in the sport before retiring in 1986. Then Tenta made his way to the WWE, where he was in major programs with Hulk Hogan for the WWE World Heavyweight Title.
