WWE has become a promotion of opportunity. Judging by the current state of the company’s roster, one cannot help but think of what could have been in booking a Royal Rumble match and WrestleMania 32 in Dallas. I for one wonder out loud from time to time how a card would look if wrestlers had not bene injured or retired due to injury. This is where my mind wanders and wonders if I have too much time on my hands.
We are all guilty of mentally planning “dream cards” where our favorite superstars meet with everything on the line – when we all know matches like these won’t happen due to lack of forethought. And if they do happen, there is some stipulation or outcome which spoils the whole damn thing. That’s just wrestling’s stronghold on us, where we hope for the best, expect the worst and are shocked when the right match comes along and blows us away. My dream card for WrestleMania 32 would have Seth Rollins, Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns in the main event with the WWE World Title on the line. AJ Styles would go head to head with Daniel Bryan and John Cena would face Undertaker in a legends match. I would have kept the Rock-Triple H angle fresh and somehow kept Brock Lesnar from destroying Bray Wyatt before April 3 in Dallas. Those five matches alone would have brought WWE back to prominence and afloat for the first quarter of the year. I’d also ad Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn in the mix and remaining members of the Wyatt Family in a match with any combination of the League of Nations. I would also keep the creativity of a Triple Threat Match with Charlotte, Becky Lynch and Sasha Banks chasing the WWE Women’s Title alive. Yes, changing the title name makes the world of difference. Maybe I have a future in this business as a script writer or creative consultant. Wrestling isn’t about what should be right, but rather what fits at the right time. The “opportunity” I speak of comes from wrestlers losing their spot and upstarts coming in a challenging for supremacy right away. Vince McMahon has a habit of taking big, strong talent and moving them right up his food chain to a title opportunity. Kevin Owens, Alberto Del Rio and Rusev all benefited from that mode of thinking. Now, so it would seem, there is even more opportunity for Dean Ambrose to grab the brass ring and steal the WWE World Title not only from Lesnar, but Reigns as well. A title match at WrestleMania and victory by Ambrose followed by a war with Lesnar is much more attractive to the fans and the almighty ratings. Reigns could still battle Triple H and the Authority for the honor of WWE without the pressure of carrying the title around his waist and hearing the boos from the fan base. Opportunity, however, will not allow that to happen. If I am calling the shots, I am making changes to the lineup, changing the directional focus of the main event roster and most importantly, listening to fans and their sensibilities. There has to be a new focal point to grab everyone’s attention. Dream matches aside, there has to be better booking and planning. If not, the main event picture will get a whole lot of crazy and fans need to see more of the stable side of this business and a lot less of the hocus-pocus involved in throwing a card together without it sticking to a marquee. Give us more stability and the dream card we all want will eventually happen.
