Thanksgiving 1990: Vince Shows Why He's The Greatest Promoter Ever!

This is going to be a very brief column. Consider it something as a Thanksgiving Special! Well at least a Thanksgiving Special for you American readers out there! Let’s go back to Thanksgiving 1990. Back when the WWF held the Survivor Series on Thanksgiving Day, and back when they actually used to STILL give us a whole card of Survivor Series elimination matches which we all know is something that is lost today. This night would be remembered for quite a few things. It is remembered for being the debut of The Undertaker, Hulk Hogan & his crew taking out Earthquake and his goon of heels, and finally it is remembered as the night we all found out....what was in that egg! The folks at the Hartford Civic Center and the folks at home watched as some guy (Hector Guerrero) dressed up like a damn turkey hatched from a giant egg that the folks of the WWF had been carting around for MONTHS!!!!!! The fans at that show totally shit on the whole damn thing! It is amazing to think that people actually paid money because they wanted to see what was going to hatch from the egg. Looking back on it in hindsight, what did we all expect? I mean it was a giant egg, so what else could it have been but some goof dressed as some kind of animal that would hatch from one? Would anything else have really made much sense? This is why this is the night that Vince McMahon showed he was the greatest wrestling promoter ever. He never promised anything was going to happen with this egg at all. He never said that anything groundbreaking was going to come of this egg hatching. All the fans knew that night is that there was an egg, and that it was gonna hatch, and that if you wanna see it hatch you either gotta spend your Thanksgiving in Hartford or order the PPV and try to get your immediate family to watch along with you! We all know how hard that can be sometimes, and this is probably the reason why Survivor Series isn’t held on Thanksgiving anymore. I urge all of you reading this to find the video of the Gobbledy Gooker hatching out of the egg next time you are on YouTube. You will not be disappointed. And you will also ask yourself “How did Vince McMahon think this was going to make money for the long term?” Or was he going to do this as some type of one off appearance for the Gooker? Does Mean Gene Okerlund look back on that night and think “Damn, that was lame”. After all, he hosted the event and then decided it would be fun to dance to “Turkey in the Straw” with the Gooker. Maybe the saddest thing here is that a lot of folks will remember Survivor Series 1990 more for the Gobbledy Gooker appearing and less for the debut of one of the most popular WWE Superstars of all time! Something to think about, but don’t think about to today while you enjoy turkey with your family! Happy Thanksgiving everyone! As always you can follow me on Twitter @whosantcox.
