When you’re a wrestling columnist, you spend a lot of times in different wrestling groups reading people’s thoughts and opinions on the current state of professional wrestling . What irks me is how a lot of people out there don’t want to give TNA either because they are WWE fanboys or it’s just due to the fact that Hulk Hogan is involved. While I understand that he is doing more harm than good, that doesn’t mean that it isn’t a totally watchable show because I feel that it’s full of some of the best athletes in pro wrestling. While TNA does quite a few things wrong, one of the things that they have right is their Bound for Glory Series. For those who are uninformed, it’s a series of matches that take place from now until the Bound for Glory Pay Per View that will be taking place in October where points are awarded based on how you win your matches against other competitors in the series. What I like about the series is that not only does it give fans fresh matches to watch all throughout the Summer when wrestling can usually being in a bit of a down period, but it is also an excellent way to give the matches meaning and importance. When you watch WWE today, and you either see the same people trading wins over and over again or you see throw away matches where the winner is pretty predictable. The matches sometimes mean very little in the grand scheme of things, and you wonder exactly what the people are fighting for. When I watch the BFG Series, I know that the people in the ring are fighting to get those points because by October whoever has the most points will be the number one contender for the TNA World Title and get their chance to main event TNA’s biggest and most important Pay Per View of the year. The best thing about it is that you don’t see Hulk Hogan’s face all over it because he is busy with that whole Aces & 8s story-line that Bully Ray is keep afloat. I also enjoy the whole list of competitors that they have involved in the series, there is a quite a bit of parity involved. If done correctly, even someone who doesn’t win the series but has a good showing can benefit from their participation which could evolve into a push later on down the road. This is a concept that TNA should keep going with on a yearly basis, and it can stay fresh each and every year as long as the same people aren’t always winning or the same people are always at the top. I am going to predict that AJ Styles will be the winner of the BFG Series. After losing a match last year at the Bound for Glory Pay Per View that barred him from getting another title shot until this year’s Bound for Glory, what better story of redemption can there be? Where not only does he get a title shot, but he did it by defeating the best guys on the TNA roster. A lot of people compare his story-line to the 1997 angle involving Sting being the avenging angel for WCW against the nWo, and I agree but that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t do it. You can criticize TNA for rehashing old story-lines, but it’s something that they do in WWE and ROH too! What’s new is old and what’s old is new. There is normally enough of a turnover in the fan base after 7-10 years that you can redo story-lines while simply updating them. As long as what they do is interesting then more power to them! The best thing about the BFG series is that it gives us nearly 4 months of story-lines that are going to be carried by the wrestling matches not matches carried by the story-lines. No wrestling show is perfect, but I like to accentuate the positives here! I hope to see some excellent matches this Summer and going into the Fall for TNA Wrestling, and I look forward to how this series plays out.
