And The Ends Justify The Means...

In case you haven’t heard the news, WrestleMania XXIX has been touted as the highest grossing WrestleMania of ALL TIME! Think about that for a moment, no other WrestleMania has done a live gate & buy rates this high EVER. For all of you out there who bitched and moan and complained about the part timers coming in and taking over all of the precious airtime this clue train has arrived for you…..ALL ABOARD! This is proof positive that guys like The Rock Triple H, Brock Lesnar, and the Undertaker are the people who draw the cash and put the asses of the casual fan into the seats. You can’t tell me that a main event featuring CM Punk vs. Dolph Ziggler was going to draw the crowd to WrestleMania, but I can assure you that The Rock vs. John Cena for the WWE Title did. Now I know that you are going to say that WrestleMania XXIX sucked balls. I KNOW THIS, MAN! This year’s WrestleMania won’t even be in the Top 10 of all time WrestleManias in regards of entertainment value, but it had enough of an interest that people from all 50 states and 34 countries paid for a ticket to fill up MetLife Stadium. There wasn’t an empty seat in the stadium! And while there were thousands in attendance, there will also millions watching at home who paid 60-70 bucks to watch it on PPV. WWE always targets the casual fans, and that is who they got, and they also got buys from the people who spend money on WWE in rote. Regardless of the wack ass build up to WrestleMania XXIX, it was a given that I was going to purchase it because it’s a tradition for me that is even bigger than Super Bowl Sunday, and I am sure there are millions of others out there who felt the same exact way. Just like how there are people who don’t watch the NFL all season, but sit down and watch The Superbowl because once again, it’s tradition. This is what makes Vince McMahon the greatest promoter of all time! We all knew what was going to happen. The event was predictable on all levels, but guess what? Vince McMahon got all of our cash anyhow! It didn’t matter if the event sucked because by show time, Outside of the folks who streamed the show for free, we had already paid! The show could have been 4 hours booked full of guys from WWE Superstars with the main event being John Cena vs. The Rock in spelling bee, and it wouldn’t have mattered at all! The casual fan probably wanted to watch because the casual fan is the same person who may have stopped watching when all of those part timers left the company on a full time basis. I know a woman who gets hyped for that next appearance for the Undertaker and I also know some folks who were going to start watching WWE again the weeks leading up to WrestleMania because they found out that The Rock was WWE Champion again. What this shows is that a bunch of internet whiners who “boycott” WWE every time something doesn’t go their way are irrelevant. The beat will go on whether you watch the product or not! The main goal in professional wrestling is to MAKE MONEY. Buy rates matter, ticket sales matter, and from a business standpoint WWE accomplished their goal in both of these areas. Of course, some of you same whiners returned to WWE the next night after Dolph Ziggler won the World Heavyweight Title, but that’s a different subject for a different column. The point is that WWE stayed the course of what they wanted to do, and it worked out for them. Just like the title of this column says “The Ends Justify the Means”. They wanted to make more money than ever before from a WrestleMania and they did! Numbers and statistics aren’t something that can be argued because the numbers don’t lie. The World of fake fighting is a bottom line business, and WWE got the results they wanted.
