Attitude Check!

Updated: Aug 12, 2020

So with another election behind us, we not only saw Barack Obama get re-elected, but we also witnessed Linda McMahon's 2nd fail attempt at getting a spot in the Senate. With her defeat, many are hoping that this will lead to WWE changing it's PG which is geared towards kids, back to something geared more towards adults. It's a public secret that Linda McMahon running for Senate is the only reason for the PG rating in the first place. I can understand this, as someone can't run for office as part of a company that has promoted violence, sex, and other things along those lines. We have seen WWE erase content from their site, move names get changed, and their philanthropy crammed right down our collective throats all in an attempt to clean their image. In the end, it was the equivalent to taking millions of dollars and putting it through a confetti machine. I've had so many people say to me that WWE needs another attitude era, and to me that's a load of crap. A dose of attitude won't cure what ails WWE. After all, when WWF was big in the 80s it was geared towards kids and no one seemed to bat an eye as it was booming. NWA Wrestling had some of the hardest hitting wrestling and sold out arenas all across the southern US, and it was done without having surgically enhanced women, swearing during promos or story-lines geared towards the lowest common denominator. WWE could have a orgy featuring all of the Divas on an episode of Raw, and the show probably still wouldn't draw past a 3.1. The rating has nothing to do with it, the problem is that it's overproduced and now made to blatantly look like fake wrestling. It's just not cool anymore Trying to rehash the "Attitude Era" isn't going to make thing better. That ship sailed a very long time ago. If wrestling is ever going to get big again, it's going to take something fresh and new to do it. The main goal should be to move forward and create new stars. I am not sure if we are going to totally see anytime soon as once January hits, we will see The Rock and a few other WWE part timers (who Vince clearly sees as real stars) come back and hog up all the spotlight. And if those are the guys WWE needs to get higher ratings on the road to WrestleMania, what does that say about the current roster and current creative team? The great thing about wrestling is that it always had the ability to reinvent itself to keep up with the times. It just seems that right now, pro wrestling in general is throwing shit against the wall to see what sticks. And as fans, we are going to have to deal with it. But the true way to make things better should be to innovate and not replicate. So forget Stone Cold making a full comeback and stunning Vickie Guerrero, and let's see pro wrestling come up with something new. I understand the want for things to go back to how they once were. When I watch footage on WWE Classics or on DVD, I always think about how much better things once were but I know those days are gone. I will always say Bret Hart of the greatest of all time, but I know some kid 15 years younger than me is going to say John Cena and he too will complain how how WWE needs to bring back "The PG Era". Let's just sit back and watch the reinvention commence. For feedback, you can email me at invidwarriorz@gmail.com or you can follow me on Twitter @whosantcox. Until next time, God Bless.
